How does a refrigerated van work?
A guide to temperature-controlled transport.
Transporting food, pharmaceuticals and other temperature-sensitive products requires specific vehicles capable of maintaining constant thermal conditions throughout the journey. This is why refrigerated vans are used: vehicles designed to ensure compliance with the cold chain and to preserve the quality and safety of the goods.
What is a refrigerated van?
A refrigerated van is a vehicle equipped to transport goods at a controlled temperature, avoiding temperature fluctuations that could compromise their preservation.
These vehicles are mainly used for:
- food transport (meat, fish, dairy products, frozen foods)
- distribution in the catering sector
- food logistics
- the pharmaceutical industry
- catering services
The insulated body
The insulated body is the insulating structure installed on the vehicle. Its job is to reduce heat exchange with the outside and keep the temperature constant.
It is generally made with high-performance insulating materials, such as:
- fibreglass
- high-density expanded polyurethane
- hard-wearing, easy-to-clean linings
Good insulation makes it possible to improve the efficiency of the refrigeration system and maintain ideal transport conditions. .
The refrigeration unit
The refrigeration unit is the system that produces the cold needed to maintain the required temperature.
It can be adjusted according to the type of goods being transported, for example:
- refrigeration (0° / +4°)
- controlled temperature (+4° / +8°)
- freezing (-18°)
Doors and airtight seals
The vehicle’s doors also play an important role. They must ensure an airtight seal to prevent air infiltration and heat loss during transport.
Why insulation is essential
A quality insulated fit-out makes it possible to:
- keep the temperature more stable
- reduce the workload of the refrigeration unit
- lower energy consumption
- preserve the quality of the goods being transported
For this reason, the design of the insulated body is an essential stage in turning a vehicle into a refrigerated one.
